Welcome to our new blog! This is a great time of the year to discuss all things birds…..I think a suitable topic would be breeding season as it is well underway! On that front, we will be starting to breed our own Peregrines, we have some wonderful blood lines which is an exciting project, however, for those eagle eyes of you, you may notice it is late in the season, therefore we do not expect any babies this year, it will allow our new couple to come together and spend the rest of the year “courting” and enjoying their new secluded aviary.
Currently when popping out to the aviaries, it is full of tail lifting, bowing and noises, all great signs the weather is warming, and our birds are raring to go! During this time all sorts of eccentricities take place in their behaviour and we certainly feel very lucky to have this front seat to all their personalities.
We often get asked do they have personalities? Answer is, yes! Lenny our Lanner Falcon is a show off – he saves his best flying abilities for a crowd! Florence our Chilean Blue is extremely stubborn, however enjoys play time with our dogs. Each bird has their likes and dislikes, over these blogs we will share lots of lovely information about our birds, their training, breeding, personalities and much more.
If you are keen to support your birds of prey in your local area at this time, best advice would be to leave your grass to grow long (encourages mice to run through long grass) get some bird boxes up high and if you are really keen to see what happens in those boxes, invest in some great wildlife cameras, it is a great time of the year for birds of prey – next blog? Will all be about thermals – let’s hope it warms up soon!
